I made these demos on handheld and 4-track cassette while living in Western Maryland circa 2001-2003. They lived in a shoebox that traveled between hot garages to freezing basements for 20 years and you can hear the damage to the tape clearly on some tracks. In December 2020 I decided to try and clear my mind and soul of all my old material once and for all, starting from the earliest point. On the dark and stormy nights of the covid winter I would sit and listen to these ghosts, mining for forgotten gems only to find that they were few and far between. So many of the ideas on the tapes were only half finished. Sadly, I had not developed a certain discipline for finishing things back in these early days of my songwriting and recording process. While most of it would be unlistenable, this collection shows the rare examples where I had a complete thought and didn't totally ruin the recording with some crazy improvisation. I struggled to share a few things because they show my voice in transition. "Something Covers Me In Stone" is the best example where you can hear that I am trying to control my voice and deliver a certain tone on record, but then I get to the chorus and just go ahead and yarl in a totally unpleasant way like i'm Kurt Cobain or something. I can still be hard on these little songs if you let me but I think it is time to let them go. I hope you enjoy spending a little time with the ghost of my past. Love, Kenny.
